If as an impressionable youngster you were bought up on your Dad's diet of Ry Cooder, Bonnie Rait and Little Feat you would have to turn out all right surely! Perhaps not if mum also inflicted some Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds on to you as well! It seems that mum and dad did pretty well because their off-spring is now seeking out the likes of Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch and not only that, she has evolved into a consummate electric, lap steel, baritone, slide and acoustic guitarist as well.

What struck me about Mia Dyson's second CD "Parking Lots" is the production. This is the kind of mix I warm to. It has a dynamic and immediate quality about it as well as a lay back subtlety. The mix allows for the impassioned, moaning, bluesy and slightly slurred vocals to come through clearly. At the same time you are aware of the strength and beauty of the guitar playing. What is generated is an exhilarating, intimate, approachable and engaging sound filled with rich roots and blues rhythms.

Parking Lots was recorded at a holiday house in Victoria's Mt Martha with Mia's band Lucs Taranto on bass and Daniel Farrugia on drums. Special guests include Matt Walker, Steve Hesketh, Carl Panuzzo, Sime Nugent and Renee Geyer.

It is a sound that many have appreciated at Womadelaide, Falls and The East Coast Blues and Roots Festival. If you haven't heard Mia Dyson live yet then here is your opportunity. Get along to the Gov' on Friday July 1st and catch her show.

To give you a taste of what is to come, "SA Roots and Blues" features from "Parking Lots" track 6 "Rivers Wide" an acoustic number with Matt Walker providing the solo.
